P&C producer license vs adjuster license
A P&C producer license is for selling and servicing property and casualty policies; an adjuster license is for investigating and settling the claims those policies produce. They are separate state licenses with separate exams, and a public adjuster holds a third license, hired by the policyholder instead of the insurer.

Adjusters show up on the producer exam too
The producer exam asks about adjusters. Adjuster types sit inside the insurance transaction part of the outline, next to binders and agent authority, so a producer candidate needs the three roles straight even without plans to settle a claim.
Sort the three by who hired the person. On the insurer's payroll: a staff or company adjuster. Contracted by the insurer for the claim: an independent adjuster. Hired by the insured to press the claim: a public adjuster. Independent and public adjusters both work outside the insurer's building, so the hiring party is the one fact that splits them.
A related rule: appraisal settles the amount of a loss only. Neither kind of adjuster, nor the appraisers and umpire, can use it to decide whether a loss is covered at all.
Pay for each role
| BLS occupation | Median annual wage | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance sales agents (41-3021) | $62,280 | May 2025 |
| Claims adjusters, examiners and investigators (13-1031) | $78,000 | May 2025 |
Sales desk or claims file
Neither BLS figure is P&C-only. Both codes count every line of insurance, and the adjuster code also includes examiners and investigators, so treat the gap between them as a rough signal. The P&C agent salary breakdown shows the spread from the 10th to the 90th percentile for agents.
The producer license fits you if you want a book of clients: quoting, renewing, adding a teen driver, writing a contractor's general liability. The adjuster license fits you if you prefer the loss itself: inspecting a roof, reading the policy against the facts, setting a value. A public adjuster license fits someone who wants that claims work on the policyholder's side, and North Carolina's $20,000 bond (checked October 8, 2026) shows the extra requirement one state we checked puts on it.
The two paths share the same policy forms. A producer explains the HO-3 before the loss; an adjuster applies it after. Our practice questions are written for the producer exam's general block, so they drill those forms but are not built to any adjuster outline. The licensing steps on the producer side are on how to get a P&C license; if you are still choosing a line, compare P&C with life and health or full P&C with personal lines.
Adjuster license questions
Do you need a P&C producer license to work as an adjuster?
In the states we checked, the adjuster license is its own license with its own exam: Texas runs a P&C adjuster exam of 150 minutes for a $49 fee, separate from the producer exam (Pearson VUE Texas handbook, checked October 8, 2026). North Carolina requires no pre-licensing course for adjusters (Pearson VUE North Carolina handbook). Your state insurance department decides the rest.
What does a public adjuster do that a company adjuster does not?
A public adjuster is hired by the policyholder to prepare and negotiate the claim against the insurer. California tests the role on its own exam of 100 items in 2.5 hours (CDI exam times and questions) with a $68 exam fee (CDI licensing fees), both checked October 8, 2026, and Illinois makes a candidate who fails wait 7 days, then 30, before retesting (Pearson VUE Illinois handbook).
Is there an adjuster practice exam on this site?
No. The P&C practice test here is built for the producer exam's general block. It drills the same policy forms an adjuster reads every day, but the adjuster outline is the state's, and it is the document to study from.
